We're giving Portfolio two stars for getting the job done and because they did give us a small credit towards our fees. We also liked the notary there a lot. She was very pleasant to us. Other than that, however, we were not at all happy with Portfolio. First, in our opinion, we felt that some of their fees were redundant and inflated. For one of the very hefty listed fees, I called 5 other escrow companies in the same county where we were buying a home and Portfolio's fees were magnitudes higher (some of the other escrow companies did not even charge this particular fee). Moreover, "snarky" does not even begin to explain this company's overall attitude towards us. We also felt that the communication was lacking. For example, we did not know that the 'escrow package' was e-mailed (not U.S. mail) to us. It went into our spam folder, unbeknownst to us. Even when we asked about wiring instructions, no one at Portfolio followed up to see if we had received the escrow package. Unbelievably, it wasn't until the final days before closing that someone realized that we hadn't received the escrow package and hadn't signed some needed documents. This could have been avoided with simple communication to inform us that the escrow package was being sent via e-mail and follow up to see that we had received it. Lastly, it was a huge insult to us that not a single person from Portfolio introduced themselves to us when we came to their office to sign papers (only the notary spoke to us). The day we were there, it seems like mostly everyone was in, but no one could be bothered to stick their head in the conference room to say hi and introduce themselves to us. It seems to us that Portfolio acted as if it was doing us some huge favor- not at all like we are the client and they are the service provider. In my profession, if I failed to introduce myself to a client who was paying for my services- well, you just would not do it. Very bad business etiquette.
