The home's purchaser selected Bay County Settlement. Looking back, I would have preferred to use another company even if using one company for the seller and one for the buyer complicated things. I was not present at settlement and gave a Power of Attorney to a family member. My family member stated that the settlement agent really seemed to try, but it was a messy closing. First, the agent could not explain some of the high seller side settlement charges. Second, the agent waited to order the final condo monthly dues payment information which resulted in a rush fee which we later had to work with the condo company to remove. And most frustrating of all, the seller side (me) closed on a Monday. The buyer did not sign until Friday at 2pm. And approximately 4pm, I received a call from the agent that she forgot to have the deed signed by my family member. Despite having more than 4 full days to remove the documents this did not come out until the last minute. It was already too late in the day for the documents to be recorded with the County, so the agent could have found a way to overnight the document to my family member (who was out of town for a long weekend) and pay for overnight return shipping. She did not, instead she asked my family member to drive and meet her, My family had to drive more than 2 hours to meet her, wait nearly an hour for her as she was late, and then drive 2 hours home. No compensation was offered for their time or mileage. Nor any apology for making such a large mistake. I fail to see how Bay County could not have corrected this situation more effectively - it would have been better to delay recording by one day (Tuesday vice Monday) when overnight mailed papers could be returned.
