Erickson was a Master Apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright and a personal friend of Mr. Wrights', often playing piano for Mr. & Mrs. Wright in their apartment at Taliesin. Erickson's designs are notable his use of natural light and for their grand scale and soaring volumes. This home is relatively unique in Erickson's vast portfolio of modern homes in that it's one of the few that truly incorporated Mediterranean influences. Originally designed and built for photographer Richard Boyer in 1966, the home features signature Erickson elements including soaring beamed ceilings, brick floors, multiple fireplaces, many large windows, skylights, sunken living (and private) areas and much more. The primary living spaces are wonderfully grand, and are set under a combination pitched / chalet roof featuring diamond skylights. The home is in mostly original and quite pristine condition. Very few changes have been made over the years, meaning you'll be purchasing a rare, mostly unmodified example of Don Erickson's stunning architectural art. A master at combining light, views, privacy and nature, Erickson designed in a wonderful private garden area off of the sprawling, sunken bedroom wing, encapsulated within a beautiful, undulating brick privacy wall. All main level spaces have vaulted, wood clad, beamed ceilings. The floor plan is wonderfully open and easy-flowing, and contrary to most designs of the times, the kitchen is massive for 1968 and even by today's standards is spacious and open, including its own fireplace with integrated brick hearth. The main level features a grand entry hall with fireplace, a den with wet bar, massive living room complete with a secondary sunken level, generously-sized dining room, kitchen, laundry, powder room and three large bedrooms, 2 additional full baths, and a bonus room in the bedroom wing, plus a three car garage with vaulted ceilings perfect for a car enthusiast who wants to add a lift (or two...or three). Downstairs you'll find another full bath, a fourth bedroom and an office, both of which look into a sunken garden area, as well as a game room area, workout space, multiple closets and a large unfinished storage and utility space. Outside you'll find a beautiful, tiered patio and plenty of yard to enjoy on the nearly 2/3 acre lot. Just a short walk from Tower Road Park Beach and Lake Michigan, as well as all the shops and restaurants along Green Bay Road in Winnetka, this is a spectacular house in a highly desirable location, and a rare opportunity to own and live in a mostly original modern home - a true scarcity in Winnetka! All of this just a minute to the Hubbard Woods train station and served by the top-rated New Trier High School district.

Single-Family Residential District
The requirements set forth in this chapter, together with other provisions set forth in the Building Code of the Village, have been adopted in order to provide for a single-family residential environment of relatively small estate character, where the degree of improvements upon an individual parcel of land is generally subordinate to the landscape. Due to the mature character of development within this district, such requirements are also intended to assure that future modifications to existing structures, or the replacement of existing structures with new structures, will not alter the scale and general character of established neighborhoods. In this regard, the requirements set forth in this chapter are further intended to foster development which is compatible, in general, with the character of existing single-family development within the immediate neighborhood with respect to external architectural scale, landscaping and other site improvements.
