In 2014, the current owners purchased the Simon O’Neal House from the Ocracoke Preservation Society (OPS) with the goal of completely restoring the home to a condition that incorporates all the modern amenities expected today while preserving its historical significance. The restoration and new addition was completed in 2015 in close collaboration with OPS and the National Park Service, resulting in a charming 1,621 heated square foot, period consistent home with 3 bedrooms, 2 new full bathrooms, a brand-new state of the art kitchen with stainless appliances, wet bar, front and back porches, a second story deck off the master bedroom, outdoor shower, and modern amenities. The historic preservation and new addition was completed in 2015 and features wood bead-board walls (no dry-wall), reclaimed heart pine flooring, tile bathrooms, custom woodwork, custom 2/2 sash windows to match those that were historically preserved, along with original corbelled chimney, and original staircase. Complementing the historic preservation is a new two zone central HVAC and all new electrical system which was contracted by custom builder, Sound Construction. The home sits on new brick footings with Simpson structural ties on both levels. In addition several feet of fill material were added to the 10,400 square foot lot to minimize the appearance the appearance of elevation while also raising the first floor for flood protection. This custom home is located within walking distance to Historic Village shopping, Silver Lake Harbor, Springers Point Nature Preserve and the Ocracoke Lighthouse which can be viewed from the second story deck. Simon O’Neal House won the OPS Historic House Award in 2016 as testament to the craftsmanship and quality of the renovation. Structural engineering and architectural plans are available on request.
