5878 Bonnie Doone Rd, Walterboro, SC 29488

Bonnie Doone is a 131+/- acre property located in the ACE Basin, overlooking the Ashepoo River and Horseshoe Creek. Dozens of old live oak trees frame the horseshoe-shaped road around the property, creating a stunning avenue of oaks which leads to the main house. Functioning as a year-round retreat center for over 40 years, this property would make a charming venue for special events and could also serve as an impressive country estate for the outdoorsman and his family. Located only one hour from Downtown Charleston. The 32-room historic manor house dates back to 1932, built on the site of the original rice plantation house which was burned by Union troops after the Civil War....Complete with a library, large dining room, solarium/cocktail room and grand ballroom on the ground floor, this house was built for entertaining! The weathered brick exterior, with its Georgian-style columns and decorative wrought-iron accents give guests an impressive first look as they approach through the long avenue of moss-covered oaks. In addition to the main house, 17 other buildings exist on the property which are in fair to average condition (see attachments). The Camellia garden located just to the left of the main house adds to the historic charm of this property. Designed by renown New York Landscape Architect, Benito Innocenti, the garden features Serpentine brick walls, beautiful iron gates, and a center fountain with expertly crafted ironwork. A small private island, referred to as Vesper's Island, sits at the South end of the property and overlooks the marsh. The island can be accessed by pedestrians and small recreational vehicles such as golf carts via a footbridge. A floating dock on the creek provides access for small watercrafts to enjoy the Ashepoo River. Protected by a conservation easement with Ducks Unlimited, the property must remain un-subdivided in perpetuity (see documents for details). Ducks Unlimited has agreed to amend the easement in order to restore hunting rights to the property. The property offers an ideal site for the construction of a 20± acre upland waterfowl impoundment. Preliminary plans for this amenity have been prepared by Coy Johnston and Richard Wood who have years of experience in the construction of similar amenities. The estate abounds with deer and offers ample open fields for the establishment of a dove field.
