Based on an award-winning design by architect Tom Leytham and first published in the pioneering book “The Compact House” by Don Metz, this hillside cottage in North Pomfret has been both lovingly maintained and sensitively expanded and improved upon over the last fifteen years by the current owners. A stylish and natural light-filled, open floor plan is simple, elegant, economical and adaptable. With a beautifully upgraded kitchen, hardwood and pine floors, and intentionally designed for the often harsh winter climate in Vermont, the architect placed the house in a position that is sheltered from the worst of the winter winds but open to sunshine. Innovative in many ways, the collective philosophy was for efficiency in both the design and utilization of the interior space as well as for minimizing energy usage; the covered porch space provides enough sheltered space for two cords of wood and the super-insulated walls still provide their intended benefit. A 2003 addition by the current owners expanded first floor entry and living space, and allowed for the addition of a first floor bathroom. The second floor offers a master suite, full bath and additional bedroom. In 2012 a detached two bay garage barn and office were added with interior finish by the construction firm of Ohara & Gercke, providing storage for cars and sporting gear and creating a well-appointed professional office space on the second floor.
