Redfin employees in DC joined the Move For Hunger team in March for the Rock ‘N’ Roll DC Marathon. The Redfin contingent raised more than $2,000 to support Move For Hunger.

For the first time in our history, Redfin is partnering with a nonprofit organization company-wide. Redfin employees have been organizing fundraisers and supporting local nonprofit organizations for years, but we saw an opportunity to make a larger impact if we channeled all those efforts toward one cause. In a recent survey, more employees said they would like to support the fight against hunger and homelessness than any other cause.

Finding the right partner wasn’t easy, which is why we’re so thrilled to announce Move For Hunger, a national nonprofit that serves all the communities where Redfin does business, as our partner.

Move For Hunger is the brainchild of Adam Lowy, whose family has owned a moving company for 90 years. Adam spent his youth on the moving truck, and he saw a lot of people throwing away food when they moved. He knew that food could be feeding people in his community, so he founded Move For Hunger and mobilized his family’s company and other moving companies to pick up food and deliver it to local food banks.

What started as a small venture in New Jersey has grown into something incredible: In five years, Move For Hunger has donated more than 4.6 million pounds of food to food banks in 48 states and Canada. Redfin is excited to help Adam and Move For Hunger gather even more food to feed even more families.

“This is a partnership that just makes sense,” Lowy says.  “Together, with the help of Redfin employees, we will educate thousands of individuals about local hunger issues while providing them with a simple way to support their communities during their moves.”

Redfin real estate agents are out in our communities helping people buy and sell homes every single day. We give our customers advice on pricing, staging, neighborhoods and strategies. And now we have an additional tip to impart: Don’t toss your food when you move; donate it instead. (Visit DonateMyFood.org to find a Move For Hunger mover near you.)

Proceeds from the sale of the first Redfin cookbook go to Move For Hunger.

“Redfin employees, especially our agents, have been excited for a more structured program to support their communities,” says Scott Nagel, president of real estate operations at Redfin. “Working with Move for Hunger is perfect because we can involve Redfin clients as well.”

Redfin is spreading the word about Move For Hunger to all of our customers, letting them know how easy it is to support a good cause with their cans of corn and bags of beans. But we’ve also been gathering our own cans, bags and boxes. In February, Redfin employees in 12 cities conducted food drives to gather 2,923 pounds of food. In the coming months, we will conduct many more food drives and turn those pounds into tons.

And last month, a group of dedicated Redfin employees joined the Move For Hunger team in the Rock ’N’ Roll DC Marathon. Agent Brian Gaverth rallied his colleagues to raise money and run in the rain. In June, a group of Redfinnians in Seattle will support Move For Hunger in the Rock ’N’ Roll Marathon there. Marie Charouhas is leading the charge in Seattle, and she was recently highlighted on the Move For Hunger blog for reaching her fundraising goal and recruiting 12 teammates so far!

We also put together a cookbook — “Redfin Recipes: The Real Tastes of Real Estate” — with recipes from Redfin employees across the country. Hundreds of employees have purchased the cookbook, with every penny going to support Move For Hunger. (Want your own copy? Buy it here!)

So far in 2015, Redfin employees have raised more than $6,500 for Move For Hunger, and we can’t wait to see what more we can do.
