RARE and MAGICAL! A once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of Berkeley History. Perched on a private knoll, this 2-story hand hewn redwood cottage offers spectacular Bay views, the serenity of a mountain Hideaway, and a colorful past. Exquisite custom detailing perfectly incorporates the provenance and soul of this special home while meeting today’s modern lifestyle. Romantic primary bedroom with fireplace, remodeled bath, a deck to enjoy sunsets and a perfect bay view. Built in the early 1920’s for himself and his wives, Scottish Engineer and Jungian psychologist Andrew Shirra Gibb created a compound which once included the two wood homes below. The house has inspired a diverse cast of characters from the dashing violinists of the world-renowned Griller String Quartet and crew of 1993 film The Joy Luck Club who filmed a scene in the living room.

Single Family Residential District - Hillside Overlay Zone
The purpose of the Single-Family Residential (R-1) district is to: Recognize and protect the existing pattern of development in the low-density, single-family residential areas of the city consistent with the General Plan; Make housing available for persons who desire detached housing and a relatively large amount of usable open space; Protect adjacent properties from unreasonable obstruction of light and air; and Permit community facilities such as religious assembly uses, schools, parks, and libraries which serve the local population and are not detrimental to the immediate neighborhood.; The purpose of the Hillside (H) overlay zone is to: implement General Plan policies for hillside development; protect the safety and health of residents where steep topography, unusual street conditions and proximity to the wildland-urban interface create severe risk from wildfire; protect the character of Berkeley's hillside areas and their immediate environs; give reasonable protection to views yet allow appropriate development of all property; and allow modifications in standard setback and height requirements when justified because of steep topography, irregular lot pattern, unusual street conditions, or other special aspects of the hillside areas.
