The Albert E. Fink Residence, 1954 | Mid-Century Modern. When architect Jim Weiner found this house, it was a diamond in the rough. But he recognized the potential this jewel offered, keeping the good bones of the house and introducing a new kitchen, bathrooms, and other finishes in a sensitive and thoughtful manner. Inspired by the architecture of A. Quincy Jones, Whitney Smith, and Edgardo Contini, who worked with the Mutual Housing Association to develop this sought-after Crestwood Hills neighborhood in the mid-fifties, the original post-and-beam construction, tongue-and-groove ceilings, stacked bond fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling glass remain intact. But Weiner has brought his extensive restaurant design experience to bear, incorporating flush-front maple cabinets, natural stone countertops, and stainless steel appliances to produce a cook's kitchen worthy of the best. Drawing on his environmental design expertise, the architect has also provided a strong ecological sensibility to the project, with solar panels, electric car charger, rainwater collection system, and non-toxic cork and Marmoleum floors throughout. The result is a cohesive composition that is not only beautiful, but green. At the top of a promontory with panoramic views from the Getty to the hills, the open plan of the home connects directly to the landscape, with wood decks, outdoor dining, herb garden, raised beds, and a metaphoric water feature made entirely of rocks imported from Yosemite.
