Sam Kaʻai’s Off-Grid Home & Sculpting Studio in Honokōhau – A Legacy of Art, Land, and Spirit Nestled deep in the rugged and sacred landscapes of Honokōhau, this rare off-grid property was the longtime home and creative sanctuary of Sam Kaʻai — master sculptor, cultural practitioner, and one of Hawaiʻi’s most influential contemporary artists. Spanning over 3 quarters of an acre of lush valley land, the property is completely self-sustaining, powered by solar energy battery equipped and grounded in a lifestyle of independence and deep respect for nature. This is not just a home — it is a living embodiment of Kaʻai’s philosophy of art, culture, and ʻāina being inseparable. The handcrafted residence reflects Kaʻai’s unique aesthetic and connection to place — earthy textures, beautiful exposed wood, creative rock walls curated from the land and property and an intuitive layout that blurs the line between shelter, landscape, and beautiful unique views of the bay. With 4 bedrooms and 2 baths on the second floor, a large wrap around deck, in addition to a one bedroom, one bath unit on the first level. Adjacent to the home lies the original sculpting studio, where Kaʻai created many of his iconic works. This spacious, open-air workshop is designed for serious creative practice — outfitted with stone and wood working tools, ample natural light, and the elemental energy only Honokōhau can provide. The land itself is rich with native flora, rock sculpted pathways, and a profound stillness that speaks to those seeking a place of refuge, creation, or ceremony. Off-grid infrastructure includes a solar array, rain catchment system, and composting setup — ideal for those committed to living in harmony with the land or a tranquil space away to create their own sanctuary. This is a rare opportunity to steward a place of deep cultural and creative significance. Whether you are an artist, cultural practitioner, or visionary seeking solitude and inspiration, or a quiet place to retreat to, this property is a sanctuary unlike any other in Hawaiʻi.

About
Honokohau
Honokohau, located between Honokohau Bay and the Maunalei Arboretum, is a coastal and rural Kapalua neighborhood with a rugged shoreline and broad mauka views. The landscape reads as lava rock, kiawe, and open pasture, with low-slung homes and long driveways that keep the streetscape quiet. The neighborhood’s character concentrates around the Honokohau Bay access area, where the shoreline trail, small pull-offs, and ocean-entry points set a salt-air, outdoors-first rhythm. Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course and The Bay Course act as major local anchors, tying daily life to fairways and coastal paths. The Kapalua Coastal Trail frames the edge of the area with pocket beaches and tidepools. Days here track surf, wind, and sunset more than storefronts.
