We are almost all the way through October, which means 2017 is just around the corner. A new year often means out with the old and in with the new. One of the best places to start is in your home. Instead of new furniture in 2017, why not opt for new paint to brighten up your space? With Behr’s recent release of their 2017 Color Currents it’s time to start thinking about paint. Their color collection includes three different moods — the Comfortable Palette, Composed Palette and Confident Palette. We chatted with Behr’s in-house color expert, Erica Woelfel, on this year’s paint palette and what trends homeowners can expect to see.

Is Grey the New White?

“Grey is not going anywhere” says Woelfel. “Grey is the new neutral of the moment.” This is evident when looking through Behr’s top 2016 interior paint colors, which included four grey tones on the list. And examining their 2017 list, that still remains true. “Close Knit” (a soft grey), “Laid Back Grey” (medium grey), “Silent Sands”( a brown-grey) and “Shades On” (dark grey) are all set to transform your home in 2017. We love the idea of using Laid Back Grey (pictured below) from the Comfortable palette, paired with a bright accent wall like Lemon Burst, from the Confident palette. These two colors really make the room pop!

Feeling daring? Try painting an entire room a dark grey for a dramatic effect. We like Shades On for a bold bedroom.

Are Blues the New Neutral?

“Blue provides a calm serene feeling and it opens up a space. They’re also easy to use,” says Woelfel. And indeed they are. Blue is a color that crosses all three color palettes from “Peek a Blue” (a soft calming baby blue) and Midnight Show (a dark dramatic blue); these colors will make any space stand out. We love the use of “Peek a Blue” in a living room. Could blue be the new neutral? We’ll have to wait and see!

Purple for an Accent Wall

“I love purple as an accent color,” says Woelfel. And it looks like 2017 will be the year that purple reigns supreme with “Artful Magenta” from the Composed Palette. “Artful Magenta” resembles a soft eggplant color and paired with grey makes for a uniquely whimsical room. Pairing it with “Silent Sands,” a brown-grey, in an office or dining room is a chic way to take your room into 2017.

Light and Airy Yellow Walls

“Lighter colors can help your room feel better; make a space feel lighter or bolder,” says Woelfel. 2017 is already giving us a few surprises and it’s the amount of yellows being showcased. Behr has included “Gold Hearted” (a gold tone), “That’s My Lime” (a yellow green) and “Lemon Burst” (bright yellow). With each palette designed to fit your personality, there’s a shade for everyone. Whether it’s using “Gold Hearted” as an accent color or painting a whole hallway “That’s My Lime.”

Mid-Century Modern Pinks

“We live with furniture for a long time. The beauty of paint is you can change out the color as often as you like,” says Woelfel. In a similar vein to yellow; pinks have taken over Behr’s list of 2017 colors. “Life’s a Peach” (a soft pink) and “Everything’s Rosy” (a rose tone) are both part of the Comfortable Palette. These colors are perfect for anyone hoping to jump on the mid-century modern trend. We love it as an accent wall to create a unique focal point in any space.

And Green is for Accents

“Some colors people won’t use for full rooms, maybe an accent wall,” says Woelfel. Jade Green is just that color. The shade, a soft emerald color, is part of the Confident Palette. It’s the ideal color for changing up a space, without changing up your furniture. This elegant color will make a perfect accent wall in a bathroom, paired with a neutral white or grey.
