The realtor had set up a boombox to play music in the front room of this traditional home with a “French Provincial aesthetic” on its first open Sunday. The reason was clear: to mask the noise of the constant flow of traffic on Tunnel Road outside the room’s imposing bay window.
Although apparently the legal address of the house is 10 Ridgeway, a quiet, narrow street off Tunnel Road — and there’s a garage on that side of the house as well as a gate that leads into the relatively spacious back yard (below) — there’s no getting away from that main artery that leads directly to Highways 13 and 24..
Having said that, this is a spacious 5-bedroom house for just over $1 million in Berkeley close to the Claremont Hotel and Resort, and the Sunday gathering place of choice for certain Berkeleyites centered around a great Peet’s, The Bread Garden bakery and Rick and Ann’s restaurant.
The home’s interior style is indeed ornate with a French feel – lots of heavy furniture, gilded mirrors and saffron-washed walls. It made it a little difficult to imagine what the house would be like beyond the decor.
The country-style kitchen on the back is pleasant and, although one bathroom has not been updated, the master bathroom is very swish. There’s space in the loft for a study and more.
