Bernard Street Bungalows: Mid-Century Modern Style

As mentioned in one of Sunday’s posts, Costa Mesa Westside is seeing some renovation. The 1.7 Ocean development on Bernard Street, a complex of 12 mid-century modern (sometimes called modernist ), duplex-style bungalows is part of this renovation. This development was originally built in the late 1950s and has recently been renovated by bettershelter, a real estate and development company.

Bettershelter has renovated these homes with new plumbing and electrical as well as with new fixtures and finishes to reflect a mid-century modern architectural style. The mid-century modern style, while maybe not unique to southern California, has a quintessential southern California feel.

Ads for the complex state: The accessibility of 1.7 Ocean allows the design-savvy buyer the opportunity to live where they work and play. As the name implies this development is 1.7 miles from the ocean. That explains, in part, the play claim. As I mentioned in an earlier post (Westside Costa Mesa Revitalized), the comments of one visitor to the 1.7 complex further explains the play aspect of the area, as well as give some insight into the flavor of the area. The comment was that the surrounding area is also in need of renovation, but “Within a few blocks away, there is “19 West” with a cool artsy vibe. Evocal, Detroit, Memphis, The Lab, The Camp and a couple art galleries that I saw pop up. 10 years Costa Mesa will be a different world.”

Since the homes on Bernard Street are advertised as the type of place that allows you to live, work and play within a short distance from your home, I thought I would verify just how convenient these homes were to jobs, schools, shopping, and entertainment. With a walkable neighborhood score of 92 out of 100, I guess this claim was not just marketing hype.
