Collection of the Week: Lounging, Eames Style

If you’re a Redfin junkie, you may have noticed photos with the same sky behind countless homes, strategically placed guitars, or (almost never), mermaids? Water creatures aside, most listing photos showcase a home itself, but sometimes a style statement like an Eames armchair features prominently.

Designed in 1956 by Charles and Ray Eames, the well-known armchair is beloved by countless devotees who have helped keep it in production for over 50 years. The married duo, working in the design hotbed of L.A., created the armchair by combining industrially-made materials like plywood and steel with traditional supple leathers to realize Charles’s vision of a chair with the “the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” Like Richard Neutra’s architecture, Eames furniture is synonymous with mid-century modern design. In fact, Neutra and the couple were contemporaries, and the Eames’s lived in a Richard Neutra-designed apartment for most of the 1940s, infusing their style into the clean lines of the West L.A. space.
