Redfin Chicago agent Dan Bergman is a passionate real estate agent and a new father to an 8-month-old daughter. When Dan isn’t spending time with his new family, he is meeting with clients and helping them reach their goal of buying the perfect home. Dan transitioned from personal training to real estate seamlessly, and brought his personable skills into the real estate world. We got to spend some time with Dan, chatting about his experience working at Redfin and what it’s like to be a part of this groundbreaking company.
How did you first hear about Redfin?
One of my friends started to work as an agent at Redfin a few years before me, and he always bragged about his job and how great it was. I then saw the company’s website, and looked into it a little more. The company has a beautiful connection to technology and it seemed like a great place to work. I was a personal trainer before working at Redfin, and when that started to come to an end, there was no question about what I would do next. My friend had been trying to pull me into the light for about a year, and I finally did it. I applied for a job at Redfin right away and have loved it ever since.
Was it difficult to transition from personal training to real estate?
It was actually a very natural transition in terms of working with clients. When I was a personal trainer, I worked with my clients to get to a goal. I walked with them through their journey, and at the end hopefully accomplished what they had set out for. Real estate is so similar to that. I work with a client through their home-searching journey and try to get to the end goal of buying their perfect house. That process really brings me satisfaction and joy. I love working with people and helping them accomplish their goals, so the transition was really easy for me.
What’s your favorite part about working at Redfin?
I think in general the job satisfaction as a whole. This job is so rewarding. Closing out a deal with a client and being there to help them with the biggest purchase of their life is such a great feeling. I also really like the freedom I have here. I have an 8-month-old daughter and this job gives me the opportunity to work from home and spend time with my daughter.
What is your favorite part about Redfin as a company?
I love how the environment at Redfin is really encouraging. Even though I work at home, I still get a lot of support from other agents. I also love how much the company cares about it’s employees. They really take care of us, and care about the long term time of its agents. The pay is great, and so are the benefits, like how Redfin gives its agents stock options; that really makes a difference.
What does a typical day look like for you?
The day usually starts with my daughter, and new dog. I then transition to the computer in my home office and work on getting back to emails and taking calls. My afternoon is filled with client appointments and home inspections etc. Occasionally, all of the Chicago agents go meet at the brand-new office downtown, and collaborate on what we’re working on. It’s really great to have the meetings and the team here because it’s a great support system and a really encouraging environment. I prefer to leave evenings open to get back to emails, and then I try to unplug around 7 or 7:30 p.m. and dedicate the rest of the night to family time.
