Home Purchase Cancellations

This monthly dataset measures pending U.S. home sales that fall out of contract, as a share of overall pending U.S. home sales
Next update: Wed May 13, 2026

About the Data

Homebuyers back out of deals for a variety of reasons, including inspection issues, financial challenges, and other major life changes. Oftentimes, the inspection contingency is what allows a buyer to cancel a contract. It is more challenging for sellers to cancel contracts. This data is subject to revision. Please note that a home that fell out of contract during one month didn’t necessarily go under contract the same month.
