Redfin Brings Childcare Information to Home Listings

Home searchers can now see nearby daycare and preschool options from Winnie directly on Redfin, making it easier to understand whether a neighborhood works for their family

Choosing a home is about more than bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage. For families with young children, one of the biggest questions is often much more practical: What does childcare look like nearby?

That’s why Redfin is partnering with Winnie, the largest marketplace for childcare and early education in the U.S., to bring local childcare information directly to every for-sale home listing on Redfin.

Home searchers can now see nearby daycare and preschool options while browsing listings, along with information including distance from the home, reviews, financial aid, staff certifications and other details that can help families understand their options.

The childcare information is available now on Redfin’s desktop and mobile websites and will be available in the Redfin app later this year.

Why Childcare Belongs in the Home Search

For parents and guardians, childcare can have a major impact on both the family budget and everyday routines. The cost and availability of care can vary dramatically from one community to another, meaning two similarly priced homes may come with very different financial and logistical tradeoffs.

New Redfin research using Redfin and Winnie data finds that housing and childcare for one child consume 52% of the median U.S. household income.

In some of the country’s largest metro areas such as Los Angeles and New York, those two expenses take up nearly an entire household income.

Lower-cost metros in the Midwest and South, including Little Rock and Des Moines, leave families considerably more breathing room.

How to Find Childcare Information on Redfin

Childcare information is now built directly into Redfin for-sale home listings, so home searchers can evaluate nearby options while they search.

Here’s how to find it:

  1. Search for homes as you normally would on Redfin.com.
  2. Open a for-sale home listing.
  3. Scroll to the schools section.
  4. Browse nearby daycare and preschool options and available details about each provider.

A More Complete Picture of What It’s Like to Live There

Childcare is the latest information Redfin has added to listings to help homebuyers understand not only the property they’re considering, but the experience of living there.

Redfin listings also include:

  • Weather insights from The Weather Company, including ZIP code-level information on precipitation, snowfall, temperature, humidity and UV index.
  • Sunscore, a 0–100 rating estimating how much natural sunlight a property receives throughout the year.
  • Climate risk data from First Street showing a property’s potential exposure to flood, fire, heat, wind and poor air quality.
  • Walk Score, Transit Score and Bike Score, which help shoppers understand walkability, public-transit access and bike friendliness.

A home may look right on paper, but the surrounding neighborhood can have an enormous impact on whether it works day to day. By making information like childcare easier to discover during the home search, Redfin is giving buyers more of the context they need to make an informed decision about where to put down roots.
