With leaves changing colors, pumpkins adorning porches, and apple orchards galore, these are sure signs that fall has finally arrived. The arrival of this new season also brings new fall design trends, ideas, and projects to keep your home looking fresh and festive. And there are many simple ways to spruce up your home without attempting a major renovation or overspending on your budget.
To help you get started, we reached out to design experts across North America, from New York, NY to Vancouver, BC, to give us their best tips to bring the fall style into your home. From decorating with vintage vessels to adding warm textiles, here are fall design trends you can bring into your home.
1) Greet guests into your home by decorating your front door
Greet your guests at your front door with a simple fall wreath paired with planters and assorted size and color pumpkins. Another small change that will make a big impact is to create a table centerpiece or decorate your mantle. This is a great DIY project that you can do by cutting branches, leaves, and flowers from your own backyard. – Miko + Boone Home
2) Paint a nighttime room with yellow and gold colors
As fall approaches and the sun sets earlier, paint a room in yellow and gold colors to extend the feeling of long, bright sunny days of summer. If you’re not going to paint, use a preponderance of yellow accessories or a predominantly yellow gold rug to get the same effect. Yellow will work beautifully with all the other autumnal colors and make for a beautiful table setting or evening gatherings around a roaring fire. – Mitchell Putlack Interiors, Inc.
3) Purge your home of negative energy
The biggest way to move energy around within your home and hopefully get rid of any stagnant or even negative energy is to edit. Try donating or selling your old items. Let the space and yourself breathe. Editing is cleansing and cathartic for the mind, body, and soul. – Jacob Laws
4) Bring natural elements into your decor
Be inspired by the colors for additional decorating. Look for the first of turning leaves and clip some branches, placing them in a festive vase on the dining table or a console near the entryway. It’s a wonderful reminder of the season’s arrival and for the holidays ahead. – DuVäl Reynolds
5) Use vintage vessels and footed bowls for floral palettes
A wide opening and shallow base works best for low arrangements versus something tall and slender for larger branches. There is nothing better for boosting the ambiance than freshly cut florals to liven up your fall décor. – Joan Enger, J. PATRYCE DESIGN
6) Create fall ambiance by using comfortable pieces
Adding cozy faux fur throws, candles scented with spiced clove or pumpkin, darker drapery panels, and organic serving ware are a few ways to instantly “fall-ify” your space. If you want to go the extra mile, paint an accent wall a dark – moody color can really transform your space (Farrow & Ball – Pelt is a favorite). – Honeycomb Home Design
7) Bring warmth into your home with scented candles
When decorating for fall, I like to bring warmth into my home in an affordable way that is easy to change once spring arrives. You can do this with scented candles (The Paddywax Olive & Thyme is a personal favorite) or with rope taper candles in a moody hue like plum or olive green. – The Storied Group
8) Decorate with branches from nearby maple trees
When decorating your home for the autumn season, use the natural materials around you to accent your space. Branches from the maple tree outside are always beautiful in a big clear glass vase. – Latham Interiors
9) Pick apples from your local orchard
One way we bring the fall feeling into your home is with an old wood bowl and a pile of apples from a local orchard. This works simultaneously as decor and allows you to celebrate the harvest season. We also bring out more blankets and throws by the couches next to the fire. – Carter Design
10) Accessorize your home with fall colored throws and cushions
Autumn is the perfect time to get inspiration from nature. Accessorizing your home with a warm autumnal color palette will bring serenity and positive energy to your living space. Throws and cushions are the most inexpensive way to transform your home into autumn mode. – Pia Orr Founder & Editor of the Finnterior Designer Blog
11) Go with warm neutral colors
Fall in love with multi-dimensional neutrals and warm winter whites this fall. Whether you are decorating with accessories, replacing key furniture pieces, or simply adding pumpkins to your porch – air on the warm side of neutral for all of your fall décor needs. – Pulte Homes
12) Use durable furniture for outdoor living spaces
In Southern California, we are blessed with the ability to be outside 365 days a year, but that doesn’t mean we don’t get cooler temperatures as the seasons change. To enjoy your outdoor living spaces during the fall, equip your patio with a fire pit, outdoor heaters, blankets, and perhaps an outdoor rug. This way, you can think of your outdoor living space as another room in your house throughout a greater expanse of the year. – David Thompson, Principal and Founder of Assembledge+
13) Focus on a single tone to mix patterns and textures
For any seasonal refresh, hone in on a color that will help establish the mood you’d like to obtain. Mixing colors can be tricky and overwhelming. Focusing on a single tone will allow you to mix and match patterns and textures, providing as much (or as little) variation as you desire. Tonal fixed elements such as tile and paint, layered with tonal furnishings, decor, and textiles, can help transform a space all while keeping it cohesive with its surroundings. – The Up Studio
14) Install patterned vent covers
This fall, accentuate your home with new vent covers. They come beautifully packaged to your door in stunning patterns and can be painted any color you want. Out with the ugly and in with the new. A snap to install, affordable, and an easy way to add a decorative and functional design element to your home this season. – Modern Metal
15) Place lamps to bring light in during shorter days
Fall signals shorter days, and it can be a drag coming home to a dark house with the time change. Place lamps in front of windows to illuminate your home from the outside as well as the inside. It’s an instant greeting to approach your home with a soft glow from inside that’s easily accomplished with a timer. Always use lamps with dimmers to achieve a soft glow. – SCW Interiors, LLC
16) Go with darker, earthly-colored rugs to feel more grounded
Try darker rugs for a more grounded, cozy feel as the weather starts to get colder. While light-colored rugs are great for brightening a room and bringing levity, darker rugs in earthy tones like rust or dark gray can create a palette that makes the room feel cozier – perfect for inside weather. – Otelier
17) Add plants and new art to give life to your home
For quick seasonal changes, we add plants to your room. Trees or mantle decorations always help freshen a room and add life during the fall and winter seasons. Also, consider purchasing new art and rotating the existing pieces to other parts of your home. To add a cozy touch, change decorative pillows and add a new comfortable throw to make the room more inviting. – Brown Davis Architecture & Interiors
18) Keep in mind how busy designers are during the fall
Be patient with your design team and know that we are working tirelessly to make your dream home a reality. We are doing the best we can in a new world of inventory shortages, shipping delays, and very full workloads. – Storey Design
