Sunset colors: “If you can see it in a sunset, you can see it in your home for 2023,” says Sonja Beaz, Owner of Lime & Render Designs. “Sunset colors range from soft pastels like pink and lavender to bold oranges and reds, evoking warmth and nature. Pink Sky by CLARE Paint is a hot pick for a fun powder room all-over color, punchy front door, or painted kitchen cabinets.”

Magenta: Alicia Cannon of AJC Design shares, “In 2023, we will take cues from Pantone’s Color of the Year, Viva Magenta18-1750, representing strength and vitality. Interior design will be more experimental this year, and spaces will create an energetic vigor we haven’t seen. Benjamin Moore’s Raspberry Blush 2008-30 and Conch Shell 052 would pair beautifully in almost any room — a kitchen, living room, child’s room, workspace, or bathroom. The softer color acts as a foundation, allowing the brighter color to create a bold impact in a yin-yang combination.”

Darker paint colors to try

Interior design trends change every year, and experts predict a shift towards darker color schemes in the upcoming year. While past years were dominated by lighter, neutral shades, 2023 is set to embrace moody and dramatic hues. Darker colors, like blue, red, and black, will add luxury and sophistication to home decor.

Deep violets and warm reds: “As Spring approaches and sets in, we will see a shift away from shades of gray for interior paint colors toward darker hues,” says Kevin Paul from Paul Brothers Softwash. “In 2023, accent walls and sitting/dining rooms are expected to feature deep violets with warm red tones. Expect these darker color tones to be found in more homes this year.”

Rich reds: “Our trending color is warm and bold happy colors,” says Winning Colors Painting. They recommend Benjamin Moore’s Raisin Torte 2083-10. “Nita Riccardi, President of Winning Colors Inc, painted the exterior of her 1872 Victorian-style house in this color. If you’re looking for a warm, off-white interior, go with Benjamin Moore’s CSP-245 Stoneware. It has beautiful undertones.”

Earthy shades will stay popular in 2023, creating a comfortable and peaceful ambiance in homes. Muted shades of brown, green, and beige create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that complements various décor styles.

Moody greens: “Let’s stay in, will be the vibe for 2023, says Todd Webb from TWebb Construction. The paint color Rosemary by Sherwin Williams is moody, introspective, and earthy and will be popular for offices, small half-baths, and bedrooms this year. This color compliments brass/gold tones and pops with natural elements like raw wood, wicker, and wool.”

Fresh green color palettes: If one color is having its moment, it’s green, according to Christina Harris of colorific. “In 2022, most paint companies chose a green hue as the color of the year, which remains popular in 2023. Go with your gut. In other words, follow trends, or don’t — there are no rules, but it is essential to do what feels suitable for you and your home.”

Neutral, earthy brown, and green color schemes: Bonnie Krims firmly believes that color can make you a lot more comfortable in your home. “This year, regardless of where you live, we’ll see paint colors based on the outdoors, especially green. This can be anything from a soothing olive green to a bold, bright emerald. Neutral, earthy palettes will include warm sandy tones, browns,  as well dark cocoa and coffee colors,” she says. In addition to nature-inspired neutrals, we’ll see many more freshly painted white walls. “Warm whites are making a major comeback.”

Soothing soft greens: “Soft, subtle green paint colors are becoming the go-to-hue as the trend moves toward sleek, warm wood tones and the soft, golden-bronze metals of the moment,” adds Susan Grant of Color Envy Design. “Color science and data tell us colors like Benjamin Moore’s Vapor Trails 1556 and Sherwin Williams’ Lattice 7654 are factually from the yellow/green-yellow hue parents. The rich, natural, yellow-based cabinetry and brushed gold hardware complemented the colors, even in older homes. These soft, grayed-out green hues are versatile, so they work well in various of my client’s homes.”

Neutral paint colors to try

While 2023 will see a rise in vibrant and darker hues, neutral shades will remain a timeless choice. Neutral colors, such as white, beige, and gray, serve as the perfect backdrop. Highlighting bolder and more vibrant accent colors. These classic colors provide a calming effect perfect for a cohesive design.

Grays and white-on-white color schemes: “Last year, interior grays and whites were the preferred color scheme choices, says Green Valley Painting. “Currently, clients are still selecting gray, white-on-white color schemes, or single colors for their projects. They are even opting to have the walls and ceilings the same color and sheen. Low sheen has been popular for several years, and I see clients expressing the desire for it on their walls and trim. A preference for a more organic natural finish seems to be growing, and having the light and airy farmhouse look is trending in Northern California.”

Classic whites: Adriana Vasconc from Spray-Net says, “Oxford white is Spray-Net’s bet for 2023, with good reason. The classic neutral tone works perfectly as a background for the bolder colors trending this year. From energizing viva magenta to calming deep olive greens, refacing your kitchen cabinets in Oxford white gives you total freedom to splash in accent colors for a festive, bright, and bold décor. Giving your kitchen this modern facelift takes as little as one day.”

Laura Neuman from PepperJack Interiors agrees that white paint is a classic. “Neutral wall paint colors will always be both on trend and classic.  Homeowners make large investments in our surroundings to achieve comfort, function and, importantly, to reflect our own personalities. Neutral wall colors provide the most flexible canvas on which to express ourselves thru art, fabrics, furnishings and the daily noise of life that often changes from season to season or mood to mood.  Sherwin Williams Shoji White will always be on my go-to list of whites.”

Greige: Soft neutrals that play well with other colors will also be essential in 2023. “Trends come and go, but greige stands the test of time and looks fabulous with an array of fresh, cozy, and even jewel-toned colors,” says Monica Hart, Brittany Hart, and Cheyenne Hart, From the HartLand. “Our go-to is Benjamin Moore Classic Gray (OC-23), a no-fail perfect neutral. Paired with crisp white trim, Classic Gray adds a clean look to fresh colors, yet easily wraps a room in snugness when paired with soft off-white and darker tones.”

Warm and bright neutrals paired with earth tones: Heather Thompson of Heather Thompson Design Studio states, “Many homeowners jumped hard on the Modern Farmhouse trend of the past 5-10 years here in Nashville, TN. But now I’m seeing the collective move from cool grays and stark whites toward more color, more warmth. Earthy, organic natural tones reminiscent of mid-century are strong on the playing field. Add clay, cocoa brown, taupe, and ecru to accent pieces or furnishings to create a lush, warm atmosphere.”

Softer paint colors to try

Soft and soothing colors are expected to be a popular choice in 2023.  It offers homes a sense of tranquility and relaxation. Pale pinks, blues, greens soothe; perfect for bedrooms, bathrooms. Soft hues with bold accents offer versatile balance and harmony for different designs.

Understated and soothing colors in similar tones: Another trend we see is colors that reflect how we feel. Bernay Laity, Color Consultant at Philip Martyn Design, anticipates soft hues as popular paint colors, helping create a calming atmosphere in our homes. “We tend to gravitate towards making color choices that mirror our feelings. And in a climate of uncertainty, I’m noticing an increase in the popularity of colors that share similar tonal qualities. These colors are all soft and soothing; gray-green, light gray-blue, gentle violet, and warm orange-pink colors.”

Color drenching: “The past few years have dramatically changed people’s approach to their interiors. We see a move away from white woodwork and ceilings in favor of contrasting or coordinating colors to create harmonious design schemes,” says Ruth Mottershead, Creative Director of Little Greene, a paint and wallpaper company. “2023 will see a reinterpretation of the ‘Color Drenching’ trend rather than a single color trend. This contemporary approach delivers an impactful finish by painting woodwork, radiators, ceilings, and doors the same color as the walls. In addition, we will feel this also being adopted in wallpapers with tonal designs, paired with coordinating woodwork and skirting.”

Dark architectural elements: Susan Mintz of America’s Color Consultants adds, “A striking trend to emerge is the desire to add personality to one’s home by adding architectural elements such as wainscoting, coffered ceilings, and “feature” walls created with furring strips in various patterns. In addition, many clients also paint their stair railings and balusters a dark brown/black or deep gray. Some are even trying these dark colors on the window/door framing and moldings of a ‘trial’ room.”
