There are many things to consider when deciding how and where you want to create a space for your crafts and hobbies. Do you have an extra room that can be designated strictly for your creative projects? Or do you need to create a small area that can be multifunctional for all your crafting ideas? Whatever setup you have in your home doesn’t matter, because any space can be turned into the perfect craft area. We asked experts from Miami to Seattle, and all across the country to share their tips for creating the perfect space in your home for all your crafts and creative projects.

Find creative ways to store your supplies and tools

Organize your most functional tools so they double as beautiful display items! You can use a piece of pegboard mounted on the wall to show off antique shears, color-coordinated spools of thread, wire cutters, and pliers. Old mason jars can be used to store paint brushes, pens, pencils, utility blades, or general knick-knacks. Also, magnet bars are great for storing scissors, snips, stitch rippers, or anything else that’s metal. –Irene Stickney, The Make Den

Make the space your own

It is important to make your space your own. I have past art that makes me happy, inspires me, and reminds me of what I am capable of. Having organizational areas to hold supplies and give them a space to live when they aren’t being used is important. With sewing, there are so many tools needed for the job, it is important you can find them when needed but that they don’t get in the way when you don’t. –Arielle Bergmann, Seen and Sewn Patterns

When space is at a premium, closets, the corner of a bedroom or under the stair’s openings can all become your creative space when you add a bit of removable wallpaper, a repurposed small table or desk, a comfy chair, and a good work light. Adding in some useful storage accessories that reflect your personality can be a great way to decorate your creative space. You can use cigar boxes, stackable decorative flip top storage boxes, vintage suitcases, lidded baskets, tarnished silver serve ware, etc. along with a folding or hanging screen, and you’re all set for some serious crafting time. –The Quilt Show

Always have your supplies available

The best way that we’ve found to stay creative is to have a dedicated space where your supplies are always out. Even if it’s just having your easel and palette in the corner of your bedroom. It’s great to just be able to go create, not spend time setting everything up before you begin and then putting it all away after you’re done. A small sketchbook near your kitchen is a great little trick to create each and every day. Even a little doodle of your meal or a funny thought is great practice. –Tony and Kim, Smile Create Repeat

We believe a creative space should inspire and your home can be the perfect setting. Surround yourself with materials and objects you love, and feel inspired whether you’re creating while getting comfy on the sofa or scooting up to the kitchen table. Knitting has been shown to reduce stress and foster feelings of well-being. Even if you don’t have time to work on something on a certain day, having your beautiful supplies visible will still help! So find creative ways to store things. –The Loopy Ewe

You don’t need a specific room to get creative

I know a lot of people who postpone being creative until they can clear out a back bedroom for a studio, or find the perfect containers to organize their art supplies. Sure, it’s nice to have a special nook to create — but what if that spot could be any place? I prop it against my toaster so I can make some art before breakfast as I wait for the kettle to boil, I pack one in my bag with a small set of watercolors and turn my commute into a chance to draw the city. –Sketchbook Skool

If carving out a dedicated art space in your home is impossible, or you like being able to make art at your kitchen table and by the bedroom window, a portable art kit is an essential tool for all times. We’ve been using little and big pouches as portable art kits for some time, but find that the more special it feels, the more I want to pick up my art supplies and use it. –Raw Materials Art Supplies

Keep your crafting sanctuary clean and focused

Prepare your space as a bird would their nest. Sturdy and humble, yet intuitively crafted, assembled from honest materials: a dependable desk, a comfortable chair, and a few treasured tokens. Keep your tools, spools, brushes, and pigments safe from little reaching fingers or hungry searching snouts. With time and sunlight, your creative process will, like a fern, quietly unfurl from within. –The Art League

Keep your crafting sanctuary clean, focused, and ready to go, no matter its size. This way, whether you’re ready to spend hours, or just 15 minutes, in your creative space your time will be one of quality. –Karleen, Sewing Studio

When it comes to creating a crafting nook, it’s more about how creatively you approach the space than the space itself. Find something that fits into your life. It should be accessible, near a clean, well-lit working surface, and just big enough to keep the essentials on hand at all times.  A well-stocked craft room means you won’t have to run to the store every time you’re feeling inspired, so be sure to stock up on basic supplies. –Paper Source

Take time to clean up

A craft room is notoriously messy. Take 5 minutes at the end of each day to put things back in their place. This simple habit will change the way you feel about your space and inspire you to be creative and get more done each new day! A bright, light, and tidy space is sure to be a happy place! Create a mood board for inspiration

Create a physical mood board and display your favorite postcards, textiles, inspirational magazine images, quotes, and photos in a beautiful arrangement. As a base, you can use a corkboard, a magnetic board, or simply your wall – just make sure it’s near the place where you usually work on your creative projects. Whenever you stop noticing it, it’s time to refresh it with new colors, textures, and memorabilia. –Dreamist
