There are many things to consider when deciding how and where you want to create a space for your crafts and hobbies. Do you have an extra room that can be designated strictly for your creative projects? Or do you need to create a small area that can be multifunctional for all your crafting ideas? Whatever setup you have in your home doesn’t matter, because any space can be turned into the perfect craft area. We asked experts from Miami to Seattle, and all across the country to share their tips for creating the perfect space in your home for all your crafts and creative projects.
Find creative ways to store your supplies and tools
Organize your most functional tools so they double as beautiful display items! You can use a piece of pegboard mounted on the wall to show off antique shears, color-coordinated spools of thread, wire cutters, and pliers. Old mason jars can be used to store paint brushes, pens, pencils, utility blades, or general knick-knacks. Also, magnet bars are great for storing scissors, snips, stitch rippers, or anything else that’s metal. –Irene Stickney, The Make Den
Make the space your own
It is important to make your space your own. I have past art that makes me happy, inspires me, and reminds me of what I am capable of. Having organizational areas to hold supplies and give them a space to live when they aren’t being used is important. When space is at a premium, closets, the corner of a bedroom or under the stair’s openings can all become your creative space when you add a bit of removable wallpaper, a repurposed small table or desk, a comfy chair, and a good work light. Adding in some useful storage accessories that reflect your personality can be a great way to decorate your creative space. You can use cigar boxes, stackable decorative flip top storage boxes, vintage suitcases, lidded baskets, tarnished silver serve ware, etc. along with a folding or hanging screen, and you’re all set for some serious crafting time. –The Quilt Show
Always have your supplies available
The best way that we’ve found to stay creative is to have a dedicated space where your supplies are always out. Even if it’s just having your easel and palette in the corner of your bedroom. It’s great to just be able to go create, not spend time setting everything up before you begin and then putting it all away after you’re done. You don’t need a specific room to get creative
I know a lot of people who postpone being creative until they can clear out a back bedroom for a studio, or find the perfect containers to organize their art supplies. Sure, it’s nice to have a special nook to create — but what if that spot could be any place? Create a mood board for inspiration
Create a physical mood board and display your favorite postcards, textiles, inspirational magazine images, quotes, and photos in a beautiful arrangement. As a base, you can use a corkboard, a magnetic board, or simply your wall – just make sure it’s near the place where you usually work on your creative projects.
