1. Local spots to get out of the cold and snow
Local business owner, Iman Abdul from Jersey City Party Characters shares, “My favorite winter activities include cozying up inside Lackawanna Coffee on Grove St with a book, getting a Hot Buttered Rum at the Miracle on Mercer, and putting on our Jersey City Party Characters Holiday Breakfast and Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance. Here’s why:
- Lackawanna Coffee: They have the most accommodating staff in town. They put a lot of thought into the business, delicious espresso, and delectable menu. It’s always perfectly warm, has the best playlists, and is a great escape from the frosty air.
- Miracle on Mercer at the Franklin Social: The exciting, almost campy holiday decorations and Christmas decor make me giddy. The Miracle on Mercer drink menu is fantastic, but the Hot Buttered Rum is top tier. It’s just the perfect drink to have after freezing all day. The staff is friendly and funny too.
- Our Jersey City Party Characters: Nothing warms me up in the winter like seeing smiles and hearing laughter. This February we’re hosting our Father, Daughter Valentine’s Dance in the Barrow Mansion. Winter is a time for comfort, so gathering, recharging, and enjoying ourselves is a must.”

“On a cold winter day, our go-to activities in Jersey City are all about staying active and keeping ourselves from going stir-crazy,” says Gabrielle Gannon from Jersey City Mamas. “Some of our favorites include visiting Liberty Science Center and taking on the Infinity Climber, heading to an indoor play place like Funzy, or doing laps around Newport’s ice skating rink. And when it’s time to warm up, you’ll find us sipping on cozy coffees or indulging in hot coco at one of our favorite local cafes – such as Hybrid Coffee and Kitchen or Treehouse Coffee Shop.”
3. Go see the exhibits
“I am not much of a cold weather person, so I love looking for unique and fun indoor activities during the winter time,” says Debbie from The Jersey Momma. “Liberty Science Center in Jersey City is one of my favorite family spots. There are permanent and rotating exhibits and they’re very hands-on, so there’s always something new and educational to see. The Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium is also located there, and it’s the largest planetarium in America. It’s easy to spend a whole day there, exploring and enjoying all that the center has to offer. On top of that, Liberty Science Center also offers fun LSC After Dark events. They’re a great way to spend a winter date night – they’re usually themed with DJ/dancing, food and more.”
4. Visit dullboy
“One of my many favorite activities to do in Jersey City during the cold winter months is hanging out at one of their cozy lounges for a cocktail and a bite to eat,” says Drew Hammell, local travel blogger. “My favorite spot is dullboy on Grove Street. With dimly lit brick walls and decor referencing Jack Nicholson’s famous line from The Shining throughout the bar, it’s the perfect spot to warm up and meet a friend for a drink. You can’t go wrong with the yoko cocktail and their signature burger.”
5. Eat at The Table
Local content creator, Sara Jimenez from Somm In The City recommends, “My favorite place to curl up with an amazing cocktail and incredible food is at The Table, Jersey City. “My favorite winter activity in Jersey City is heading down to the ice skating rink by the Newport Center and enjoying the NYC skyline,” says Brenda Kessler from Children & Nature Network. “What’s great is that some days Newport Skates is open until late in the evening, making it possible to enjoy the views both during the day and at night. While we are not expert ice-skaters, the space is very friendly and gives us a great reason to bundle up and get outdoors.”
7. Visit the miniature hidden ruins
“A little known fact is that there are miniature hidden ruins, a sculpture created quite a while ago. These ruins are in the reeds and there is a small path that leads you to them,” says local resident Michael from Rockness Music. “Not many people know about it. On a crisp cold day the reeds really pop against the blue sky and the water nearby freezes a bit. It’s quite beautiful. There’s a tiny beach there too.”
8. Newark Pedestrian Plaza
“My favorite winter activity in Jersey City is strolling the Newark Pedestrian Plaza to grab food or ice cream,” says Keely Fickau from Keelzinthecity Events. “It’s always full of life and people walking around and enjoying each other’s company. All of the new restaurants make my stomach and heart happy.”
9. Play or watch indoor basketball
“We believe the best winter activity in Jersey City is watching our loved ones and friends play basketball games every Sunday,” says Peyton Kay from GRIT Sports Training. “Jersey City is legendary because of its roots with the legendary Bobby Hurley’s St. Anthony’s High School Basketball Team. The Hudson County Basketball Association, a non-profit organization, continues this tradition by running a program where over 100 kids 5-11 yrs old play for their team every Sunday at NJCU’s three indoor basketball courts.”

They also have the best espresso martinis, which are great on a cold day.“
12. Play pickleball
Abhishek Jain, Co-founder of Kotofit, recommends, “Embracing winter’s chill in Jersey City, my favorite pastime is the spirited game of pickleball. Three times a week, I find myself at Kotofit Pickleball Club, where the fast-paced rallies and friendly competition make every session a joy. Beyond the thrill of the game, pickleball keeps me active, ensuring winter doesn’t dull my fitness. It’s more than just a sport; it’s a community. Each match introduces me to new faces, turning the court into a social hub that warms my heart even in the coldest weather.”

After the walk, I like to warm up at the Light Horse Tavern, where they serve comforting food and drinks – the perfect remedy for a cold winter day. If you’re lucky enough to experience a snowstorm, you’ll find it truly magical to walk around the city in the evening and watch the snow slowly fall, creating a magical winter wonderland. It’s the perfect opportunity to feel like a kid again.”
16. Walk around some neighborhoods and admire street art
Melissa Koffie from The Global Ghana Girl travel blog, “One of my favorite things to do in Jersey City in the winter is to stroll through the mural district and various neighborhoods around the city to see the street art. As an art enthusiast, it’s one of my favorite things to do whenever I visit -with a hot chocolate in hand, of course. There are 200 murals throughout the city and they’re all so unique, vibrant, and beautiful. This artwork was created through the Jersey City Mural Arts Program, which is dedicated to empowering and transforming the city through art.”
