As skyrocketing housing costs and remote work continue to drive a record share of homebuyers to relocate, house hunters are more eager than ever to understand internet connectivity at their potential new home. That’s why every home in the U.S. on Redfin.com now includes data about the internet service providers, speeds and types of internet available at the home.
Since the pandemic began, we’ve heard from several customers that understanding a home’s internet access is not just a nice-to-have; it’s a need-to-have during their home search. In fact, it’s our most-requested feature for home listings. Here’s a small sampling of feedback we’ve received, lightly edited for clarity:
“In my recent search for new properties, it has become painfully apparent that oftentimes internet availability is a big sticking point. In the recent climate of working from home, increased streaming, and generally spending more time at home, the internet is a core necessity of our lives. It would be SO helpful if Redfin were able to provide information regarding internet speeds and availability.”
“I have excluded a number of properties based on the unavailability of broadband. Each search requires a laborious search with ISPs to see how fast the Internet could be. It’s getting frustrating.”
“We have been browsing for a home. Our first priority is to find one where there is the ability to get access to high speed internet because our jobs depend on that. I believe that high speed internet should be a search criteria option since so many people need this at their homes now.”
We’re excited to make internet connectivity data available for homebuyers. Right now, you can find this data on Redfin.com, and later this year, it’ll be available on our mobile app as well.
